PUP SAN JUAN CAMPUS:

Tanglaw ng Bayan sa Dambana ng Kagitingan

Despite its proximity to Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Main Campus, the University’s commitment to democratize access to educational opportunities for economically challenged members of the society is strongly felt in the very heart of the National Capital Region, the historic city of the so called Ang Dakilang Lungsod ng San Juan.

Through the relentless effort of the City Government of San Juan under the administration of Mayor Joseph Victor G. Ejercito, who believes in the power of education in nation building, the long cherished dream of the people of San Juan to establish a public college in the city has began to unfold. It started with the issuance of Memorandum Order NO. JVE-C-13, Series of 2007, creating a Special Committee to study and prepare the ground works for the establishment of an academic institution.

Recognizing PUP as a state-run university whose track record and history began at the turn of 19th century and continued to flourish to this day as a stronger and viable institution of higher learning committed to effect change in the lives of the youth, the Sanguniang Panlungsod of San Juan through City Resolution No.32, Series of 2007 authorized Mayor JV Ejercito to sign the Memorandum of Agreement with the University on December 13, 2007.

The Sanguniang Panlungsod passed City Ordinance No.6, Series of 2008, known as “An Ordinance Establishing a PUP Campus in the City of San Juan, Metro Manila and appropriating funds thereof” on January 21, 2008.

The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement by Mayor Joseph Victor G. Ejercito, in behalf of the City of San Juan and University President Dr. Dante G. Guevarra, in behalf of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines on February 20, 2008 becomes the landmark in San Juan’s long history of struggle, this time against ignorance.

Subsequently, the PUP Board of Regents under Board Resolution No.613, Series of 2008 has approved and ratified the Memorandum of Agreement on March 14, 2008. Since then and for the years to come, PUP San Juan Campus strives to become Tanglaw ng Bayan sa Dambana ng Kagitingan.

Soon after, in June of the same year, what was formerly Baranggay Addition Hills Elementary School was transformed into PUP San Juan Campus making use of the renovated elementary school building as the home of its first batch of 391 students, in its first year of operation.

To this day, PUP San Juan Campus offers a variety of  academic curricular programs responsive to the needs of the community; namely, Bacherlor of Science in Accountancy (BSA), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), Bacherlor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), Bacherlor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BSENT), Bacherlor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM), Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSEd) major in Math and English and Bachelor in Banking and Finance (BBF).

As it enters into the fourth year of operation this AY 2011-2012 making the Campus as a full blown in terms of year levels, the student population has grown to 1,400 and continues to cater the San Juaneños youth providing them a quality but affordable tertiary education.

With the unwavering support from the City Government of San Juan under the new administration of Madame Guia G. Gomez, City Mayor and the City Council underthe leadership of Vice Mayor Francisco Zamora, a newly structure and bigger building has emerged that houses the administrative offices, classrooms, function rooms, library, laboratory rooms and a gym equipped with state of the art facilities.

With the PUP’s presence in the City of San Juan, the University’s commitment will become stronger and deeper as it continues to mold the young minds and hearts of San Juan’s Iskolar ng Bayan for the fulfillment of their dreams and better life.
